Why Does My AC Keep Turning On and Off? Short Cycling Explained

If your system runs for two or three minutes, shuts off, then kicks back on a few minutes later — all day, every day — that is short cycling, and it is quietly wearing out your compressor every time it happens.

A normal AC cooling cycle in South Florida runs somewhere between 10 and 20 minutes before shutting off, then stays off for a stretch before starting again. If your system is turning on and off every 2 to 5 minutes, all day, that is short cycling — and it is one of the fastest ways to turn a cheap repair into an expensive one if it is ignored.

Why Short Cycling Is Worse Than It Sounds

Every time a compressor starts, it draws a large surge of current — several times its normal running amperage — to overcome the pressure differential and get moving. That surge is completely normal for a system starting a handful of times a day. It is destructive when it happens every few minutes for hours on end. The extra mechanical and electrical stress accelerates wear on the compressor windings, the start capacitor, and the contactor relay far faster than normal cycling.

1. Dirty Air Filter (Most Common Cause)

The system then restarts a few minutes later once pressure normalizes, only to trip again. In year-round-AC Florida, this is extremely common with filters that go 60+ days without replacement.

Fix: Replace the filter. If short cycling stops within one or two cycles, this was your cause.

2. Oversized AC System

If your AC was sized larger than your home actually needs — common when an installer sizes off square footage alone instead of a proper Manual J load calculation — the system cools the air fast enough to satisfy the thermostat in just a few minutes, shuts off, and the house warms back up quickly because the humidity was never properly removed during that short run. This creates a cycle of frequent short runs instead of the longer, humidity-controlling runs a correctly sized system produces.

3. Refrigerant Overcharge or Undercharge

Both too much and too little refrigerant can cause the system's pressure switches to trip prematurely, shutting the compressor down before a normal cycle completes. Undercharge (a leak) is more common; overcharge usually traces back to a previous service visit where the system was topped off incorrectly.

Fix: Requires a licensed technician with gauges to measure actual refrigerant pressure against the manufacturer's specification and correct it. Cost varies $250–$600 depending on whether a leak needs repair first.

4. Failing Capacitor

A weak start or run capacitor can cause the compressor to struggle on startup, trip a protective overload, shut off, cool down, and try again — repeating the short cycle pattern. This is especially common on systems 6+ years old, since capacitors live outside in Florida heat year-round and degrade steadily.

Fix: Capacitor replacement, $180–$350, usually resolves this immediately.

5. Thermostat Placed in a Bad Location

A thermostat mounted in direct sunlight, near a supply vent, or on an exterior wall can read the room temperature incorrectly, satisfying quickly and shutting the system off before the rest of the house has actually cooled. This shows up as short cycling even though the equipment itself is healthy.

Fix: Relocating a poorly placed thermostat is a simple job, usually under an hour of labor.

6. Low Refrigerant From a Slow Leak

Beyond just causing weak cooling, a slow refrigerant leak reduces system pressure enough over time to trip the low-pressure safety switch repeatedly, producing the same short-cycle pattern as overcharge. If your system is also blowing less cold than it used to, this is more likely than a simple pressure imbalance.
