AC Blowing Warm Air in Florida? 9 Causes and What to Do Right Now

It is 92 degrees in Tamarac, your thermostat is set to 74, and the air coming from your vents feels like a hairdryer. Here is the exact 5-minute check list our techs run before they even pull out a meter — plus the 9 things that are actually causing it.

Few things make a South Florida homeowner panic faster than walking through the house and realizing the air coming from every vent is room temperature. The blower is on. The thermostat says it is calling for cooling. Outside, the condenser is either humming away normally or eerily silent. Either way, the temperature inside keeps climbing.

We run this call every single summer day in Broward County. The cause is one of nine specific things. Here is the order to check them in, what you can fix yourself, and what needs a tech.

Before you read further: if your outdoor unit is making a loud humming or buzzing without the fan spinning, switch the breaker for the outdoor unit OFF immediately. A stuck contactor or seized compressor can burn out a $1,800 part in under an hour of running.

The 5-Minute Quick Check List (Do This Before You Read the Rest)

Sixty percent of warm-air calls we get in South Florida are solved by one of these five things, in this order:

  1. Thermostat mode — Confirm it says COOL, not HEAT or FAN-ONLY. Confirm the setpoint is below the current room temperature.
  2. Thermostat batteries — If your stat takes batteries (most do), pop the cover. If it has been over a year, replace them. Low batteries cause weird half-functioning behavior.
  3. Air filter — Pull it out. If you cannot see daylight through it, replace it.
  4. Outdoor breaker — Look at the gray disconnect box mounted on the wall next to your outdoor condenser. If the switch is in the OFF position or the pullout cartridge is removed, that is your problem. (This trips after a power surge, which we get a lot of in Florida.) Reset it. Also check your main electrical panel for any tripped breaker labeled "A/C" or "Condenser."
  5. Outdoor unit — Walk outside and listen. The fan on top should be spinning. If you hear humming but the fan is not turning, see the alert above and shut the system down.

If you went through all five and the air is still warm, work through the 9 causes below.

1. Thermostat Set Wrong or Wired Wrong

The single most common cause of "AC blowing warm air" calls we get in Florida is a thermostat someone bumped or reprogrammed. Smart thermostats with auto-schedule features are especially good at this — a guest plays with it, or a vacation schedule kicks in, and suddenly the system is in HEAT mode.

If you recently had a thermostat installed and this is the first hot day testing it, the installer may have wired the Y (cooling) and W (heat) terminals backward. Smart thermostats also need C-wire (common) connection to function properly — without it, the relay clicks but never holds, so the compressor never engages.

Fix: Set it to COOL, set the temperature 5 degrees below current room temp, and listen at the outdoor unit. Within 60 seconds you should hear the compressor kick in.

2. Clogged Air Filter

A filter so dirty it restricts airflow does two destructive things at once: it can freeze the coil (we covered that in our AC freezing up guide), and it can cause the system to throw a high-pressure trip that shuts down the compressor while the blower keeps running. Result: warm air.

In year-round-AC Florida, a 1-inch filter needs replacement every 30 days during summer. Standard pleated filters are $8 to $15 at any Home Depot, Lowe's, or hardware store.

3. Frozen Evaporator Coil

If the indoor coil is frozen solid, no air can pass through it and what little does pass cannot be cooled. The vents end up blowing weak, lukewarm air. Telltale sign: visible ice on the copper line going into the air handler, or water on the closet floor as the ice melts.

Fix: Switch the system to OFF, leave the fan to ON, wait 2 to 4 hours, then check for the cause (almost always a dirty filter, a clogged drain, or low refrigerant). Full instructions in our frozen AC guide.

4. Outdoor Condenser Tripped, Blocked, or Off

This is cause #1's evil twin. Even if the thermostat is calling correctly and the indoor blower is running, if the outdoor compressor and fan are not running, the system is just circulating warm room air. Same effect as a fan on a hot day — air movement without cooling.

Walk around to your outdoor unit. If it is silent or only the fan is moving (without the deeper hum of the compressor), something has stopped the compressor:

  • Tripped disconnect breaker (the gray box on the wall next to it)
  • Tripped main panel breaker labeled "Condenser" or "A/C"
  • Hurricane or summer-storm power surge damaged the contactor or capacitor
  • Dense overgrowth, hedge trimmings, or palm fronds blocking the coil so badly it overheated and shut itself off

For the blockage issue, you can spray the outdoor coil from the inside out with a garden hose (with the breaker off) and then reset the breakers. If it still will not start, you have cause #6 below.

5. Low Refrigerant from a Slow Leak

Your AC does not consume refrigerant. If it is low, there is a leak. Low refrigerant means weaker cooling, eventually drifting into "barely cool" and then "warm." Sometimes a leak is gradual enough that you do not notice until a heatwave.

Symptoms specific to a refrigerant leak:

  • Hissing or bubbling sounds at the indoor unit or outside at the service valves
  • Air feels cool but not cold (around 65 to 70°F at the supply vent, when it should be 18 to 22 degrees colder than the return temperature)
  • System runs constantly, never satisfies the thermostat
  • Electric bill has crept up over the past few months
  • Ice forms on the larger insulated copper line going to the outdoor unit

Fix: Always a pro. EPA rules require certification to handle refrigerant. Leak search runs $99 to $250 with electronic detection or UV dye. Repair plus recharge ranges from $250 (an accessible Schrader valve) to $1,500+ (a buried coil leak). 6. Failed Capacitor or Contactor

The capacitor is a small cylindrical part inside your outdoor unit that gives the compressor and fan motor the jolt of voltage they need to start. The contactor is the relay that closes when the thermostat calls for cooling, sending power to the compressor. Both fail regularly in Florida because they live outside in 95-degree weather year-round.

Symptoms of a bad capacitor:

  • The outdoor unit hums but the fan does not spin (try the broomstick test: turn the system off, push the fan blade gently with a wooden stick from above; if it then spins up and runs, your start capacitor is weak)
  • Clicking sound from the outdoor unit, but nothing else
  • You can see the top of the capacitor bulging upward when the access panel is removed (do not touch — it stores lethal voltage even after power is off)

Fix: Pro job, but cheap and fast. Capacitor replacement is $180 to $350 and takes under 30 minutes. Contactor replacement is $150 to $250.

7. Compressor Failure

The compressor is the heart of the outdoor unit — it pressurizes refrigerant so it can absorb and release heat. When a compressor seizes, fails internally, or has a winding short, the entire cooling cycle stops even though the fans and blower keep running.

Signs the compressor is the problem:

  • The outdoor unit makes a grinding, screeching, or hard-knocking noise
  • The AC breaker trips immediately every time you reset it
  • The outdoor unit vibrates hard enough that the entire cabinet shakes
  • Everything else (fan, blower, capacitor, thermostat) tests fine but the suction line stays warm

Fix: A failed compressor is the most expensive AC repair short of replacement. Compressor alone: $1,500 to $2,500 in parts. Installed: $1,800 to $3,500. On any system over 10 years old, we will run the math for repair vs. replacement before recommending the spend.

8. Leaking or Disconnected Ductwork in the Attic

Your AC may be producing cold air just fine, but if a duct connection has come apart in your attic or a flex duct has a rip, that cold air is going into the 130-degree attic instead of into your living room. By the time the remaining air reaches your vents, it has lost so much temperature it feels warm.

Florida homes lose 20 to 30 percent of conditioned air through duct leaks on average. Some homes we measure have leakage past 40 percent. Telltale signs:

  • One or two rooms are dramatically warmer than the rest of the house
  • Weak airflow from some vents but normal from others
  • Your attic feels surprisingly cold when the AC is running (that is your cold air heating up the attic)
  • Dust accumulating on furniture faster than normal

9. Undersized System or Major Heat Gain

If your AC never quite catches up on the hottest summer days — air temperature is "cool-ish" but the thermostat creeps from 74 to 78 by 4 PM — the system may simply be undersized for the load. This can happen if:

  • The original installer sized the system off square footage alone (Florida code now requires a Manual J load calculation)
  • You added a Florida room, enclosed a porch, or finished out an attic without adding capacity
  • You removed shade trees on the south or west side of the house
  • You upgraded windows but new energy-efficient windows did not change the load enough to offset other gains

An undersized system can technically run all day and never produce truly cold air at the vent because the equipment cannot keep up with the heat coming into the home.

When to Stop Troubleshooting and Call a Tech

Call for same-day service immediately if any of these are happening:

  • You smell burning plastic or hot electrical insulation
  • The breaker trips and reset and trips again
  • You have a baby, elderly family member, or pet in the house and indoor temperatures are climbing past 82°F
  • The outdoor unit is humming but the fan is not turning (compressor damage starts in minutes)
  • You have already run through the 5-minute quick check list AND replaced the filter AND reset the breakers, and the air is still warm
