The 78°F number comes from a 1980s Department of Energy recommendation built around a national average climate. It assumes outdoor humidity around 55 percent. In Broward County, outdoor humidity averages 75 to 85 percent year-round. At those humidity levels, 78°F indoor air feels closer to 82°F — uncomfortable enough that most people drop the setpoint back to 74 and run the system harder than if they had just started at 76 in the first place.

The Honest Answer: 75 to 77°F Daytime, 73 to 75°F Nighttime

At 60 percent indoor humidity, 78°F feels like 82°F. At 45 percent humidity, the same 78°F feels like 76°F. Same temperature on the wall, completely different experience on your skin.

Daytime Strategy (When You Are Home)
Start at 76°F. Live there for 3 days. If you are comfortable, leave it. If you feel slightly warm, the issue is probably humidity not temperature — check your indoor humidity with a $15 hygrometer.
If indoor humidity is above 55 percent: you are not too hot, you are too damp. Lowering the thermostat will only fix this temporarily because the AC will short-cycle (run brief, cold bursts that do not remove moisture). Better answers: clean the coils, check duct leaks, add a whole-home dehumidifier, or right-size the system if it is oversized.
If indoor humidity is under 50 percent and you still feel warm: drop to 75°F and re-evaluate. Most healthy adults find 75 to 77°F with low humidity ideal for active daytime hours.
Nighttime Strategy (Sleeping Hours)
The body's core temperature drops 1 to 2 degrees naturally during sleep, which is why a slightly cooler bedroom helps you fall and stay asleep. Sleep researchers consistently recommend 65 to 72°F for the bedroom — cooler than the daytime ideal.
For Florida homes with central AC (one thermostat for the whole house), pushing the master bedroom down to 65 means overcooling the rest of the house at night. Compromise: set the central thermostat to 73 to 75°F at night and use a bedroom ceiling fan to make the master feel 4 to 5 degrees cooler.
If you have a smart thermostat with remote room sensors (ecobee SmartSensor, Honeywell T9 with sensors), you can prioritize the bedroom at night without running the whole house at 70. The remote sensor reads master bedroom temperature, the AC runs to satisfy that sensor specifically. This is one of the best uses of smart-thermostat technology in Florida.
Away-From-Home Setback (The Biggest Single Savings)
This is where almost all the "raise your thermostat to save money" advice should land. If you are at work, school, or running errands for 6+ hours, the house does not need to be 75°F. Bumping the setpoint to 80°F for those hours, then dropping it back to 76 before you arrive home, saves real money without any comfort loss.
Math: 3 to 5 percent savings per degree raised, times 4 degrees, times 8 hours per day. On a $200/month summer bill, this is $24 to $40/month. That is $150 to $250 saved over a Broward summer (May through October).
Two warnings specific to Florida:
- Do not raise above 80°F for away periods. Beyond 80, indoor humidity creeps above 60 percent and you risk mold growth on porous surfaces (drywall, carpet, fabric).
- Do not turn the AC OFF for away periods. Same humidity issue, much worse. A system running occasionally at 80°F maintains dehumidification. A system OFF for 9 hours does not.
The right way to do this is a programmable or smart thermostat with a daily schedule. Manually adjusting every morning and evening lasts about 4 days before you forget.

Vacation Strategy (1 Day to 2+ Weeks)
This is where Florida-specific advice diverges most from the national norms.
The instinct is to turn the AC off when you leave for vacation. In any other climate, that would be fine. In Florida, that is how homeowners come back to a humidity-warped piano, swollen kitchen cabinet doors, mildew along baseboards, and a musty smell that takes weeks to clear.
The correct setpoint by trip length:
- 1 to 3 days: 82°F. The AC will cycle on briefly to keep humidity below 60 percent, using minimal energy.
- 4 to 7 days: 83 to 85°F, plus close all blinds and curtains to reduce solar gain. Consider unplugging electronics that generate heat.
- 1 to 2 weeks: 85°F plus a portable dehumidifier set to 55% in the largest living area, draining to a sink or bathtub. Belt-and-suspenders mold protection.

Hurricane Pre-Cool Strategy
This is a specific Florida tactic worth knowing. When a named storm is forecast within 24 to 48 hours, drop the thermostat to 72°F for 4 to 6 hours before the storm arrives. Pre-cool the house to the lowest setpoint you can tolerate. Once you lose power, that cooled mass (walls, furniture, contents) will radiate cool for 12 to 24 hours, buying you an extra night of sleep without melting.

Smart thermostat ROI in Florida is one of the strongest in any climate, because the heat dome is brutal and the savings from automation compound over a 10-month cooling season. The three we install most often:

Common Florida Thermostat Mistakes
Five things we see in nearly every "high electric bill" service call we run:
- Thermostat located in direct sunlight or near a hot kitchen. Reads artificially high, system runs more than it should. Solution: relocate, or use a smart thermostat with a remote sensor in a better spot.
- Cranking the temperature way down to "cool faster." The AC does not cool faster at 65 than at 73. It runs longer. Set the temperature you want; the system reaches it at the same pace.
- Switching between COOL and AUTO modes constantly. Pick one and stick with it. AUTO is correct for most Florida homes.
- Fan setting on ON instead of AUTO. Fan-on continuously circulates air but increases humidity because moisture on the coil gets re-evaporated into the air during off cycles. Use AUTO unless you have a specific air-quality reason.
