AC Freezing Up in Florida? 7 Causes and How to Thaw It Fast

A frozen AC in 90-degree Broward weather sounds impossible, but it happens every week in South Florida. Here is what is actually going on inside that ice block, what to do in the next 10 minutes, and how to keep it from coming back.

You walk past your air handler in the garage or laundry closet and see something that makes no sense in 90-degree Broward weather: a block of ice on the copper lines, water pooling on the floor, and the vents inside the house are barely pushing air. Or you check the outdoor unit and the larger insulated line going into it is coated white with frost.

This is one of the most common emergency calls we run in South Florida between April and October. The good news: a frozen AC is almost never caused by something catastrophic. The bad news: if you keep running it, you will turn a cheap fix into a compressor replacement. Here is exactly what to do, and what is causing it.

First: How to Safely Thaw a Frozen AC in 10 Minutes (Plus a 2-Hour Wait)

Before you do anything else, you need to get the ice off the coil without damaging the system. Do this whether you plan to fix it yourself or call a tech:

  1. Set the thermostat to OFF. Not just to a higher temperature — the compressor needs to fully shut down.
  2. Set the fan to ON (not AUTO). This pushes warm room air across the frozen coil and melts the ice 3 to 4 times faster than letting it thaw on its own.
  3. Put towels under the air handler. All that ice is going to melt into water. Most air handlers have a drain pan, but in Florida the drain line is often clogged, which is part of the reason the coil froze in the first place.
  4. Wait 2 to 4 hours. If the whole coil is encased in a solid ice block, wait the full 4. Do not turn the compressor back on until you have verified there is no visible ice anywhere on the lines or coil.
  5. Do not use a hairdryer, hot water, or anything sharp. Forced thawing bends the aluminum fins and can puncture the copper, which turns a $200 repair into a $1,500 repair.

Once it is fully thawed, work through the 7 causes below in order. Numbers 1, 2, and 3 you can usually fix yourself. Numbers 4 through 7 need a licensed tech.

1. Clogged Air Filter (The #1 Cause in South Florida)

Your AC works by blowing warm room air across an extremely cold evaporator coil. The coil absorbs the heat and the cooled air goes back into your house. When the filter is clogged, not enough warm air reaches the coil. With nothing to absorb the cold, the coil drops below 32°F. Florida air carries so much humidity that moisture instantly freezes onto the coil instead of draining off as water.

In Tamarac, Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, and anywhere else with year-round AC use, a standard 1-inch filter needs to be replaced every 30 days during summer. We have pulled filters from Broward homes that look like gray felt — completely choked — and the homeowner told us, "I replace it every 6 months like the box says." That schedule is written for a temperate climate where the AC runs maybe 1,200 hours a year. In South Florida it runs 3,500+ hours.

What to do: Pull your filter out right now. If you cannot see clear daylight through it when held up to a window, replace it. Standard pleated filters are $8 to $15 at any hardware store. If you replace it and the system freezes again within a week, your problem is one of the other six on this list.

2. Blocked or Closed Return Vents

Return vents are the larger grilles on the wall or ceiling that pull air INTO the system (as opposed to supply vents that blow air out). If you have stacked furniture against them, put a rug over a floor return, closed a bedroom door with no door undercut, or have a return grille so full of dust that no air gets through, you have the same problem as a clogged filter: not enough warm air reaching the coil.

This one is sneaky because nothing looks broken. The system was working fine. Then someone rearranged the living room, blocked the big return behind the couch, and three weeks later the system iced over.

What to do: Walk every room and find every return grille. Move anything within 18 inches of it. Make sure no doors are pinning the return behind them. If the grille louvers are coated in dust, vacuum them. Run the system for 24 hours and see if the freezing stops.

3. Dirty Evaporator Coil

If your filters have been ignored for years (or the system was installed without one of the catch-all return filter racks Florida builders love), dirt eventually bypasses the filter and coats the coil itself. A dirty coil cannot absorb heat well, so it overcools, drops below freezing, and starts collecting ice the same way as in cause #1.

You can sometimes see this through the access panel on your air handler — if the aluminum fins look gray, fuzzy, or have visible buildup, the coil needs cleaning.

What to do: This is technically possible to DIY with a foaming evaporator coil cleaner, but it is messy and easy to bend the fins. A professional coil cleaning runs $150 to $300, takes about an hour, and includes a system pressure check. We do these as part of every Comfort Club tune-up.

4. Low Refrigerant (Almost Always a Leak)

This is where things get expensive. Your AC does not consume refrigerant like a car consumes gas. If the level is low, refrigerant is escaping somewhere. Low refrigerant means low pressure in the coil. Low pressure means the boiling point of the refrigerant drops, which means the coil gets even colder than designed, which causes ice.

Signs you have a refrigerant leak rather than an airflow problem:

  • You replaced the filter and cleared the returns, and it froze again within a week
  • You hear a faint hissing or bubbling near the indoor unit or outside at the condenser
  • Ice forms specifically on the larger insulated copper line going to the outdoor unit (the "suction line"), not just on the coil
  • Cooling has been weak for months, gradually getting worse
  • Your electric bill has crept up without you changing anything

What to do: This is always a professional repair. EPA rules prohibit DIY refrigerant work, and simply "topping it off" without finding the leak means the problem comes back within weeks. A leak search and repair runs $250 to $1,500 depending on whether the leak is in an accessible location or buried in the coil itself. 5. Failed Blower Motor or Capacitor

The blower is the indoor fan that pushes air across the evaporator coil. If the blower motor is dying, the capacitor is weak, or the fan wheel is dragging, the system cannot move enough air across the coil — same downstream effect as a clogged filter, just from a different cause.

How to tell:

  • You can hear the air handler running, but the airflow from the vents feels noticeably weaker than it used to
  • The motor sounds rough, whiny, or louder than normal
  • You hear a humming sound from the air handler when the system starts but the fan does not immediately spin up
  • The motor is hot to the touch through the access panel

What to do: A licensed tech needs to test the motor amp draw and capacitor microfarads. A capacitor replacement runs $180 to $350. A full blower motor replacement is $400 to $800 depending on whether you have a PSC or ECM motor.

6. Clogged Condensate Drain Line (A Florida Specialty)

Your AC pulls about 5 to 20 gallons of water out of South Florida air every day. That water flows out through a small PVC drain line, usually exiting somewhere on the side of your house. In Florida, that drain line is a magnet for algae growth, biofilm, and roof debris. When it clogs, water backs up into the drain pan and can short-circuit the float switch — or in older systems with no float switch, it floods the air handler and drips onto the coil, where it can freeze.

You can usually spot this one by water stains on the ceiling under the attic air handler, or water pooling on the closet floor.

What to do: A wet/dry shop vac on the exterior drain line cleanout clears most clogs in 60 seconds. If you cannot find the exterior cleanout, or the line is permanently sloped wrong, you need a pro. Drain line clearings are $89 to $150 as a standalone service, included free in Comfort Club.

7. Outdoor Temperature Dropped Below 60°F

This one is rare in South Florida but happens every January when we get a cold snap. Standard residential AC systems are not designed to run below about 60°F outdoor temperature. If you run yours on a 55-degree Broward morning to dehumidify or just out of habit, the head pressure can drop low enough that the coil ices up.

When to Stop Troubleshooting and Call a Tech

Call same-day service if any of these are true:

  • You have already replaced the filter, cleared the returns, and waited 24 hours, and the system iced over again
  • You see oil residue or wet spots near the copper lines (indicates a refrigerant leak)
  • The breaker for the AC has tripped, or the indoor unit smells burnt
  • Water has flooded your air handler closet or dripped through a ceiling
  • Someone in the home is elderly, an infant, or has a respiratory condition and indoor temps are climbing past 82°F
